6 injured in fast-moving Olney fire

OLNEY - March 12, 2012

The two children remain in the hospital at this hour. One of them, a 6-year-old boy, is listed in critical condition.

The fire began around 4:00 a.m. inside 219 West Albanus Street. The house is middle of the row, and home to three generations of the Lundi family. Neighbors watched in horror as flames spread along the porch line to another occupied house, 215.

Neighbor Helen Wharton recounted what she experienced, telling reporters, "I heard a little girl say, 'MOM, MOM!' And then I ran out the door and woke my son up and told him, 'GET OUTSIDE! GET OUTSIDE!' And we saw people jumping out the window."

Several adults were transported by medics from both houses, but the most seriously injured is the 6-year-old grandson from the Lundi home. Neighbors identified the boy as Isaiah, said to be burned over 40-percent of his body.

The 2-year-old child injured in the fire is Isaiah's nephew. The 2-year-old's grandmother, Loretta James, says, "I saw all the family in the ambulance. The younger son was badly burned. The mom was messed up - [her] face was messed up. My grandson's fine. He just got out of emergency."

The father of the 6-year-old and grandfather of the 2-year-old told reporters he believes someone set the fire. However, fire officials are stressing that the cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Officials did say that there is no evidence of working smoke detectors inside 219.
