Mild winter had many benefits

CENTER CITY - March 19, 2012

No complaints from walkers, cyclists and joggers on this balmy last day of what has been a mild winter.

"I think it's fantastic," said Tom Conway of Ardmore, Pa. "It's great to look at the five day and five days out its to be in the 70's. Every single day. No downside, I can't see any at all."

Winter began December 22. Since then, temperatures have averaged 6 degrees above normal. There were 18 days where the highs topped 60 degrees. That means people had to burn less fuel to heat their homes.

We certainly had snow: 3.7 inches, that's 15 inches below normal.

All that is great news If you happen to run a meat market like one in Port Richmond that sells smoked sausages . Proprietor Ed Swiacki explains snow keeps people home, whereas mild winters mean people grill out.

"The more kielbassa sell the better!" he told Action News.

A mild winter is also apparently good for taxpayers. PennDOT District 6 earmarked roughly $31 million for winter use, but with less snow it will have a lot left over.

Nick Martino, who we usually interview during impending storms, met with us Monday night in his shirt sleeves. The extra money will now go to repairing highway infrastructure this spring.

"We're going to have money left over, around $12 to $14 million dollars from our winter budget," said Martino. "And we are going to put it right back in our roadways."
