Baby, woman injured in Newark dog attack

NEWARK, Del. - March 20, 2012

The incident happened at 9:36 a.m. at a home on the 1600 block of Old Baltimore Pike.

Kent County SPCA Major Brian Whipple says the dog is an adult, unneutered pit bull between one and three-years-old; it is owned by the family where the attack happened.

Whipple says officers have been told the child may have been going for the dog's food and the dog snapped at him.

The sequence of events is not clear, but officials say the mother got involved and the dog bit the mom on the wrist breaking her wrist and then bit the child on the back of the head and shoulder.

The child was admitted to A.I. DuPont Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The couple surrendered custody of the dog to the Kent County SPCA.

The dog was up to date in its vaccinations.

Major Whipple says the SPCA responded to a similar situation with the same dog about a year ago when another child was bitten in the home.
