Elderly man released from hospital reunited with family

NORTH PHILADELPHIA - March 21, 2012

"They let him out, 87-years-old, doesn't have any money on him. We don't know where he is. We've been out here since 1:30 last night combing the area," Cunningham's son-in-law Keith Rollerson said.

Cunningham's daughter Cheryl Rollerson says she took him to the ER Monday morning after he began complaining of chest pains.

She says the staff said he'd be admitted and put in a room when one became available.

But she had to pick her husband up and left at 5:00 p.m. She says the staff told her to call for updates.

"She called back every hour, they said 'we're still testing him, we're still testing him.' Then around 11:00 last night, when she called back and they told her he had a room, but they released him," Keith Rollerson said.

Truman Cunningham had left Temple Hospital around 10:00 p.m.

"The assistant manager name Daniel said they released him because he said he had a bomb, he was swinging on people, and he had $200 on him," Cheryl Rollerson said.

Now, he is nowhere to be found.

Even worse, the family says Cunningham is in the early stages of dementia, has trouble walking, and has no cell phone.

They want to know why they were not called and told he'd be released so someone could pick him up and, if he was unruly and of unsound mind, why police weren't called for help.

"No one called us, no one cared, now we can't find our father," Cheryl said.

"They didn't make calls to nobody. His friend who he lives with, they didn't call her; they didn't call my daughter, they didn't call none of his family. They just released him and let him go," Keith said.

The hospital tells Action News it can't comment on what happened citing privacy laws.

So Action News inquired about general hospital guidelines when discharging patients, especially when dealing with the elderly. A spokeswoman says she'd find those answers but has yet to call back.

Cunningham was found early Wednesday morning.
