Police: Teen sexually assaulted in Wilmington park

WILMINGTON, Del. - March 23, 2012

The 19-year-old was sexually assaulted late Thursday night along the 500 block of South Franklin Street in Kosciuszko Park.

Around 10:00 p.m. the victim says she was approached by the suspect who was wearing a black hoodie and blue jeans.

"He pointed a black handgun, and forced her up in to Kosciuszko Park and forcibly raped her - sexually assaulted her," said Lt. Matt Kurten of the Wilmington Police Department.

Neighbors said police told them the suspect had the gun at the girls' back and walked her all the way up the sidewalk to an abandoned storage building.

"I am shocked that it did happen here, so close," said Myron Martin, an area resident.

That sentiment is shared by many who live in the area.

"Well, it's actually a surprise because it doesn't seem like something that would happen around here," said Jose Rodriguez.

Police put out a reverse 911 call last night instructing residents to be on alert.

"It's scary. It really is. We don't go out at night because there have been incidents like this before," said Dolores Nagowski.

Authorities believe this was an isolated incident - a random attack but they are asking the public to take a close look at the suspect.

He is described as a black male in his mid-20's, 5'9" to 5'11" tall, with a thin build and weighing about 170 pounds.

Anyone with more information should contact Wilmington detectives.
