Parents appeal to Vatican over school closures

PHILADELPHIA - March 23, 2012

Archbishop Charles Chaput has already denied appeals concerning the planned closure of the South Philadelphia schools. So the parents hired a Boston-based attorney to travel to Rome Sunday and ask the Vatican to intercede.

Peter Borre tells the Philadelphia Daily News an appeal has already been filed with the Vatican's Congregation for Catholic Education.

The Archdiocese wants Sacred Heart of Jesus and Our Lady of Mount Carmel schools to merge with a third school. The parents want the merger to be at Mount Carmel.

Borre helped 13 parishes in Cleveland get the Vatican to reverse a diocese closing decision earlier this month.
