All-clear given in Rittenhouse Square apartment hazmat

CENTER CITY - March 23, 2012

Some 30 people were evacuated from the Rittenhouse Claridge Apartments around 9:00 a.m., after the Philadelphia Fire Department received reports of a chemical odor on the 7th floor.

According to Philadelphia Fire Chief Richard Davison only the 7th floor of the 25-story building, which faces Rittenhouse Square, was evacuated.

Eight people, 7 adults and 1 child, were transported to area hospitals for throat irritations.

Davison told Action News that air samples taken on the 7th floor came up negative and the cause of the odor has not yet been determined.

A hazardous materials team declared the situation under control shortly before noon and residents were allowed back onto the 7th floor.
