Free screening in Mt. Airy promotes men's health

EAST MT. AIRY - March 24, 2012

For the second year in a row Einstein Healthcare Network joined with Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church in East Mt. Airy to turn the church into a giant health clinic.

Throughout the day men of all ages have been getting free tests for blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes and HIV along with colorectal and prostate exams.

"It's a safe, scared space so we're getting all the barriers out of the way so that a man can own his health," said Sr. Pastor Alyn Waller.

The goal is to screen, get the numbers, and have men use that information to get the care they need.

"If your blood pressure is high, you're at high risk for a stroke. If you're cholesterol's high you're at risk for a stroke or heart attack and unless you know the numbers you can't take corrective action," warns Dr. Steven Sivak.

Men crowded the hallways and testing rooms to take advantage of the screenings.

"Well I just found out that my blood pressure is normal which I was very pleased with however my glucose and cholesterol are a little high," said Kenny Hodge.

"Especially for men in today's society, get your check up because a lot of times we don't take care of ourselves," said Timothy Richardson.

For those needing follow-up, doctor appointments were being made on the spot.

Along with plenty of information and even free haircuts, everyone screened got a "Know Your Numbers" card which offers 15 percent off at participating local businesses.

"I think this is a very positive thing to get the guys together, just to understand what's going on with their health," said Christopher Smith.

Organizers expect to screen well over 1,000 men at Saturday's event. Know Your Numbers will run until 8:00 tonight.
