Local company collects prosthetics for needy nations

EXTON, PA.; March 28, 2012

Dozens of donations - prosthetic legs, feet and arms have already come in to Ability Prosthetics and Orthotics in Exton, Chester County.

Taffy Bowman, a certified prosthetist, says they're asking anyone in the community with a used prosthetic they no longer need, to donate it.

"Perhaps it's somebody who passed away and it's their family that is making the donation. Or it is somebody that um has a new prosthetic and their old prothesis doesn't fit them," she says.

The donated devices will be taken apart by volunteers at the YMCA Adaptive Sports program.

The pieces will then go to countries in need, to be put back together, and fitted for people in need.

Taffy volunteered time in Haiti, helping many amputees. She it was very rewarding to see people like Eujette, who lost her right lower leg, regain her independence.

"Seeing her friends and family come out to greet her when she got back to her home, or tent city, um was just an experience I will never forget," she says.

And it doesn't just help them physically, but also psychologically. In many countries there is a stigma that goes along with a missing body part.

Ability Prosthetics is accepting donations up until April 13th. They can be dropped off Monday through Friday at the office at 660 West Lincoln Highway in Exton, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. They can be reached at (610) 873-6733
