The 2-alarm blaze broke out around 5:00 p.m. at the Best of Life Park in the 100 block of South Virginia Avenue.
Fire was reported on a third floor unit of a 14-story building.
The fire was confined to one unit, but smoke filled several floors prompting some evacuations.
The fire was brought under control within a half hour.
One man was taken to the hospital with burns to his arms and chest. His condition is unknown.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
