Wegmans tops Consumer Reports grocery store rankings - 6at4

April 3, 2012

Consumer Reports magazine conducted the grocery store rating project and released the rankings for the first time since 2008.

More than 24,000 Consumer Reports readers nationwide sent in responses about nearly 43,000 supermarket locations.

Wegmans was the top-ranked store overall, coming in as a leader in several categories including fresh produce, baked goods, visible price labels and checkout speed.

Pathmark came in at the bottom of the listings, finishing among the lowest for visible price labels, checkout speed and accuracy of price scanners.

The complaint issued the most about grocey stores was that there were not enough open checkout lanes to handle the customers looking to make purchases.

The survey also found that high rankings in some areas didn't prevent customers from giving low rankings in other areas. For example, Whole Foods had high rankings, except when it comes to low prices. Or Walmart was ranked low for perishable food items, but was praised for having low prices.
