Conshohocken restaurant serves up the Titanic menu

CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. - April 10, 2012

Philadelphia's Widener family co-owned the Titanic and gave a banquet for first-class passengers in honor of the captain.

It was served the night an iceberg sent the giant liner to the bottom of the North Atlantic.

Thanks to family record-keeping, we know exactly what was on that ten-course menu.

Selections from it will be served Sunday evening at Blackfish in Conshohocken.

Owner/chef Chip Roman enjoys a good challenge. He says it was tricky lining up the ingredients then preparing them as they would have been a hundred years ago.

He's created everything from salad to foie gras to a lemon sorbet. It's being served by reservation only at a price of $95.00 per person.

Roman saw the movie 15 years ago but his interest in the Titanic was spurred by a recent Time Magazine article on the ship's sinking, April 15, 1912.

It was five days out of Southampton, England, bound for New York. Roman's research touched him with how food has evolved over a century, both in terms of ingredients and preparation. He'll serve celery, which is ordinary today.

A hundred years ago, it was unusual for a chef to do anything but boil celery as a flavoring agent. Reservations for this dinner are essential. Make yours via Black Fish Restaurant, or call 610-397-0888

Blackfish is at 119 Fayette Street in Conshohocken, just blocks north of the Schuylkill Expressway. They're open Tuesday through Friday for dinner at 5:30pm, Saturdays and Sundays at 5:00pm.

Its regular menu features meats and seafood from local sources and vegetables from local providers when possible.
