A passing officer was flagged down by a passenger inside the vehicle. Medics arrived and El was pronounced dead a short time later.

"Kareem was my spiritual brother and I will always remember that he was a loving caring brother who always had a beautiful smile on his face," said Terrance Hopkins-Bey.

Family and friends are trying to cope with their loss.

"We just ask everyone to send out their thoughts and we just ask for your strength and your prayers for the family to pull through this," said Hopkins-Bey.
