The penalty phase of the retrial of James Cooke Jr. began on Wednesday, and jurors heard about the 41-year-old's criminal history. Cooke was found guilty last week of 10 charges, including first-degree murder, rape and arson in the death of 20-year-old Lindsey Bonistall. Prosecutors say he broke into Bonistall's off-campus apartment and raped and strangled her before placing her body in a bathtub and setting the apartment on fire.
Prosecutors on Wednesday presented Cooke as a life-long criminal, who had been convicted of 18 crimes as a juvenile and eight more as an adult.
Jurors will recommend whether Cooke should be executed.
