Police search for 2nd gunman in Grays Ferry shooting

PHILADELPHIA - April 21, 2012

"There's no reason those two thugs had to shoot it out in the streets," said a neighbor.

Neighbors and members of townwatch gathered in front of the home of Clarice Douglas who was shot on her porch as two men traded gunfire Friday afternoon on Corlies Street.

Philadelphia Police say one man is in custody and still in the hospital after he and another man traded shots on the 1500 block of Corlies Street in Grays Ferry.

Douglas' family spoke with Action News Saturday night.

"The neighbor's daughter come running over here and upstairs telling me that Clarice had been shot, and I had just left her here on the porch," said the victim's mother Mary Douglas.

The victim was a stay-at-home mom who had three adult children and a young daughter and son. She was waiting for them to come home from school when the bullets started flying around 2:30pm.

As the mother grieves, Philadelphia Police say one gunman is recovering in the hospital. The other shooter is still out there. He may have been shot as well.

"I was devastated, just devastated," said the victim's cousin, who did not want to be identified. "I can't believe… I really cannot believe she is gone over somebody's stupidity."

The violent act was the reason neighbors came out of their homes Saturday night and raise their arms in prayer for the Douglas family. They also vowed to help make their community a safer place.

"I'm not worried about snitching. I will go to court, and they are going to see my face, because you did something wrong. You could have killed my son, you could have killed my daughter, you could have killed my neighbor's daughter or son and that's not happening while I'm on watch," said Moses Cotton, a member of the community townwatch.

"Turn yourself in and give yourself up. You did something wrong. You shouldn't have been on the streets shooting," was her cousin's message to the shooter.

"She was loving, fun caring, and she loved her children; she loved her mother," she said.

While Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey says detectives recovered one of the weapons along with more than a dozen bullet casing on the street, he also made a plea for the public's help.

"These aren't folks coming in from another city to commit crime in Philadelphia. These are Philadelphians killing Philadelphians, and we need people to provide information so we can get them off the street," said Commissioner Ramsey.

Police are not releasing the name of the gunman in the hospital. They are hoping that someone saw something that could help them solve this case.

Anyone with information is asked to call Philadelphia Police or dial 911.
