Cameras catch people dumping trash, dogs in Camden, N.J.

CAMDEN, N.J. - April 23, 2012

And they are asking for the public's help identifying people seen abandoning trash and dogs in five more incidents.

The arrests were made as part of Operation Hawk Eye, which uses mobile cameras placed in locations around the city to help police spot illegal activity. The cameras were purchased with money forfeited during the course of criminal investigations.

WATCH: Surveillance of illegal dumping

"After two successful years of restoring pride in our neighborhoods through the Camden Clean Campaign, we are upping the ante by aggressively targeting individuals or businesses who think they can use our city as a dumping ground," said Camden Mayor Dana Redd in a statement.

"The use of video surveillance cameras will definitely aid our Police Department to apprehend and charge illegal dumpers, as well as assuring our residents that we are committed to keeping Camden clean," said Redd.

The three locations where police say people were caught on camera dumping illegally were Norris Street and Lansdowne Avenue, 28th Street and Adams Avenue, and 30th Street and Cleveland Avenue.

On Monday police released video of the five additional incidents.

In one incident, a car pulled up to a vacant lot. Someone opens the back door and lets a black dog out. The driver takes off abandoning the pup to fend for itself.

A surveillance camera was also rolling when the driver of a green minivan dumped big mattresses.

Police believe another man seen on tape abandoned a cat.

Another instance shows people in a silver car tossing an object out a car window trying to get a dog to follow. When the dog stays put, they open the door, kick the dog out, and leave the pet behind.

People in a white pickup truck are seen unloading old furniture, leaving it for someone else to clean up.

If you recognize any of the people seen in the surveillance images, you are asked to call the city's hotline at 856-757-7042.
