Text messages improve flu shot rates

NEW YORK, N.Y.; April 24, 2012

In an experiment in New York, doctors found that sending text message reminders to parents helped increase the flu vaccination rate among low-income kids.

It worked even better than phone reminders, and it got kids vaccinated earlier in the season.

Dr. Melissa Stockwell, the study leader, found, "They were more likely to receive their vaccination by late fall before the flu begins circulating in the community."

Although the experiment was only done with flu shots, Dr. Stockwell thinks text reminders could help boost other vaccination rates, and get out other important health information.
