Several watch organizations made it very clear that David Toledo was in no way part of their groups. Many of them thought his behavior was suspicious.
Police are still keeping a close eye on the street and Toledo's home as the outrage against the suspect rises.
Many residents of Aldine Street were on their porches and out on the street Wednesday night talking about David Toledo.
"Do I feel like giving him a punch and smacking him because he slashed my wife tires, of course I do, you know what I mean," said Oliver Pagan.
The news rippled through the community like shockwaves as the residents, many of them victims of the serial tire slashings, learned that outspoken neighbor was accused of committing the crimes.
Police say Toledo was a self-proclaimed member of the neighborhood block watch and town watch which had been patrolling the area for months.
Those groups came together Wednesday night to say that while Toledo expressed interest in joining them and came to at least one meeting, he was never a part of any of the area watch organizations.
"I can't stress enough the level of betrayal that was displayed by this individual, and it's not fair that it tarnishes or tries to tarnish the Mayfair town watch, the Tacony-Holmesburg town watch, the Mayfair Civic organization," said Milt Martelack.
Philadelphia Police officers spent the evening on the block in an effort to keep the peace.
"Let the justice system take care of Mr. Toledo. We don't want any type of retaliation; we want everyone to work with the block watch and the townwatch groups," said Captain Frank Bachmayer.
There are concerns someone will try and vandalize Toledo's home or attack his wife who is standing by him.
"She does not believe he did this," said family friend Karen Woldsmit. "I know for a fact she had no knowledge of this, and she wants you to respect the fact that her world is crashing right now."
Police distributed notifications to residents about a community meeting to be held Thursday night. The meeting is scheduled at 7:30pm at 4300 Aldine Street. They want to make sure that the neighborhood townwatch and block watch continue to get the support of the residents.
