It happened just after 3:30 a.m., on Thursday on the 5600 block of Elliot Street in Southwest Philadelphia.
Police say an officer was chasing an escaped prisoner when the officer fell and hit his head.
The officer suffered a concussion, was evaluated at the scene and transported to the hospital in stable condition.
The prisoner is back in custody. He had escaped earlier from police at 55th Street and Pine Street.
He was originally being held for aggravated assault charges.
Philadelphia Police have not released any names.
