Secretary Shailen Bhatt tells WDEL that the auditor found 25 checks written to the agency that were never cashed or deposited. They totaled $161,000.
He says there's no statute of limitations on those debts, so the agency is going back to the parties who wrote them to collect.
The department is also enacting measures to make sure any real estate deals that the agency handles are related to transportation and that better records are kept.
