Police said late Monday that 27-year-old Matthew Williams of Newark has been charged with multiple burglary, theft, attempted theft and criminal mischief charges.
Authorities say residents near Chelmsford Condominiums in Newark reported seeing a suspicious person looking into vehicles early Saturday. A short time later, a resident found a car with its engine on nearby. Authorities say they learned that Williams was the owner of the car and that several vehicles in the area had been broken into.
Police say they caught Williams near Route 4.
Authorities say they had been investigating recent vehicle break-ins at several area communities. Police recovered numerous stolen items at Williams' home.
