Surveillance released of Trenton sex assault suspect

TRENTON - May 8, 2012

Investigators say the leads have dried up and they believe the release of a sketch and the surveillance video can generate enough tips to track down the suspect.

The violent struggle played out for several seconds as a Trenton woman tried to fight off the man police say would eventually rape her.

He tried to cover his head but a surveillance camera captured a face shot of the man who jumped the victim around 1:15 a.m. Wednesday morning at Bellevue Commons Apartment complex on Bellevue Avenue.

"It's so bad. I can't even express the words for it, that's how bad it is," Trenton resident James Ceaser said.

The 54-year-old victim was outside smoking a cigarette when the man walked up and demanded cash.

She said no.

Detectives say that's when he grabbed her by the neck and pulled her behind the building where he sexually assaulted her.

Since the attack, James Ceaser has been standing out front making sure his mother gets in and out of the building safely.

"You know word of mouth is saying a lot of crazy things going on so I'm just trying to stay on my toes and protect my family," Ceaser said.

Investigators also released a composite sketch of the man.

Police are not the only ones on the lookout for him; those who live in the community say they're ready to turn him in.

"I was totally afraid because I'm a single mom and it's just me and my son," one resident told Action News.

There are actually several single mothers and women who live here.

A resident who didn't want to be identified told Action News, Bellevue cCommons has been a quiet place which is why she's surprised by the brutal attack.

"But I just hope for safety precautions that they do step up security or beef up security or anything like that," she said.

Speaking of security, Trenton police haven't told Action News if they've stepped up patrols in that area.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 278-TIPS (8477).
