Del. teacher charged with assaulting student

NEWARK, Del. - May 10, 2012

Iris K. Saunders, 38, of Bear was arrested on Thursday and charged with assault and disorderly conduct.

Delaware State Police say it was on the morning of Monday, April 16th when the student involved made a comment about a teacher.

That comment was overheard by Saunders, police said, who approached the student and told him to apologize.

The student refused, police said, and that's when the assault allegedly happened, leaving the student with a minor injury. That student went to the school nurse for treatment, police said.

After her arrest on Thursday, Saunders was arraigned and released on her own recognizance.

There was no immediate word on her employment status with the school district.
