Police: Driver resists arrest in stolen vehicle

Claymont, Del. - May 12, 2012

It happened around 3:00 Saturday morning, when undercover troopers tried to arrest 36-year-old Leo J. Pierce for an outstanding warrant.

As troopers closed in on the driver, investigators say he ran his car onto a curb and began driving toward them. Troopers shot the driver after he allegedly refused to stop the car.

The violent encounter occurred near the intersection of West Brandywine Avenue and 4th Street in Claymont.

The suspect was not hit by the officer's gunfire but was taken to Wilmington Hospital for an evaluation. He was later released into police custody.

Authorities say the vehicle that Pierce was driving was reported stolen from a car dealership on Thursday.

Pierce now faces a list of charges stemming from Thursday's incident and the most current one - charges include receiving stolen property, resisting arrest, and criminal mischief.
