New Barnes Museum opens with gala celebration

PHILADELPHIA - May 18, 2012

Friday night's gala was for the people who helped make the new museum happen.

There was a lot of glitz and glamour, but many people say they can't wait for the rest of the public to see it up close and personal.

Hundreds were welcomed by the chords of a guitar to the outdoor garden that led to the new Barnes Museum.

Dr. Albert Barnes and his beautiful art collection were on the minds of many who entered the modern building on the Ben Franklin Parkway.

Members of the Barnes Foundation, sponsors and city leaders celebrated the opening of the world class art gallery.

"This exceeded our wildest hopes and expectations, and if you read today's New York Times they said this is an incredibly accurate recreation but only better," said Ed Rendell.

The turmoil and controversy that lead to this moment could not be forgotten, as those who believe the museum should not have been moved protested across the street.

"We have this great art collection, it should be seen by more people than were able to see it at its previous location," said Mayor Michael Nutter. "Let's move on, let's enjoy it and enjoy the beauty of what the Barnes is bringing to Philadelphia."

Former Barnes Foundation President Kimberly Camp says Dr. Barnes would have wanted that, and she is hoping that people will learn more about him.

"He was brilliant," said Camp. "He didn't do this by accident, so I really hope this city grows to love him and his collection."

In a week, the public, families, children, and art lovers alike will finally get to see the new Barnes Museum in person.

"That is my absolutely highest priority of all; all shapes and sizes. I want the kids. The first thing I thought of was the neighborhood kids," said Suzanne Lindsay.

There will be 56 consecutive hours of free admission with a ticket for the kids and everyone else beginning next Friday.
