Phila. neighbors honor hero police officers

PHILADELPHIA - May 19, 2012

With strong support, local police officers were recognized for their hard work and dedication to protecting the people of West Philadelphia.

A total of 10 officers and firefighters who work in the 19th Police District were honored by the community for their standout service.

"Many of them have done outstanding things, saving lives and going beyond the call of duty," said Joann Manuel.

The 19th Police District Advisory Council has held these award luncheons for more than 25 years. Being named Police Officer of the year was a top honor for Richard Link.

"It's amazing because they see a lot of bad stuff. Usually when we show up it's not the best of terms; something is wrong and they need us to come in and help. It's good to see the community on a good level," said Officer Link.

Organizers tell me they host this event every two years. It is a way to keep close ties between emergency responders and the members of the community they work hard to protect.

"The closer the ties we have hopefully the higher the rate of fire prevention we can get," said Captain Linda Long.

Fire Captain Linda Long named Reggie Harris Firefighter of the year for rescuing a mother and her two children from a burning building. Harris' parents proudly accepted the award on their son's behalf.

"To be out here fighting fires and going through the things that they go through every day to rescue us and other people, we're very proud," said Ernest Miller.

Deputy Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel told the crowd it is important to honor these heroes. They risk their lives each day to save ours.
