Playwright, screenwriter William Hanley dies at 80

NEW YORK (AP) -May 29, 2012

His daughter, Katherine Hover, says he died on Friday at his home in Ridgefield., Conn.

Hanley's works include "Slow Dance on the Killing Ground" and "Mrs. Dally Has a Lover" and the teleplays "The Long Way Home" and "The Kennedys of Massachusetts." He won Emmys for the TV films "The Attic: The Hiding of Anne Frank" and "Something About Amelia."

He also wrote the screenplay for the 1969 film, "The Gypsy Moths," as well as several novels.

A native of Lorain, Ohio, Hanley is also survived by another daughter, Nell Hanley; a sister, Patricia Hanley; and three granddaughters.

His sister Ellen Hanley was a musical theater actress. She died in 2007.
