911 tapes released in NJ radio host murder

LINWOOD, N.J. - June 5, 2012

So far there have been no arrests in the murder of 47-year-old April Kauffman of Linwood

While police work to find out who took her life, these just released 911 tapes chronicle what happened in the moments following her death.

It was just around 11:30 a.m. on May 10th when police received a 911 call from a man who took care of April Kauffman's birds.

He was calling from her home in Linwood.

911 Operator: 911. What is your emergency?

Caller: Yes, I have, my boss is down. She's got a cut on her arm

911 Operator: Ok, where are you, sir?

Caller: 2 Woodstock Drive, Linwood.

911 Operator: 2 Woodstock Drive?

Caller: Yes, ma'am.

Atlantic County Prosecutor Ted Housel has revealed that the veteran's activist and radio host was shot multiple times, although he won't say exactly how many or with what kind of weapon.

The 911 call gives no hint that Kauffman had been shot.

Cross chatter can be heard in the background from other emergency operators.

Caller: Yes, my boss is lying on the floor in her bedroom and she's got a cut on her arm and she's not answering me. 2 Woodstock Drive.

Rescue Operator: What is it?

Caller: 2 Woodstock Drive.

Authorities have not named a suspect in this case, but have said they don't think the killing was random.

The victim's husband, Dr. James Kauffman, delivered an emotional eulogy at her funeral and gave a lengthy interview to police before retaining local attorney Ed Jacobs.

Residents are hoping whoever is responsible is caught soon.

"I thought it would be wrapped up fast. It sounded like an intimate job so I thought it would be wrapped up fast, but we haven't heard anything really," Linwood resident Tonya Dinofrio said.

"I think that people think it's like CSI and it's not, it's more complicated than that," Linwood resident Ashley Richmond said.

Kauffman's former colleague at WOND Radio, Harry Hurley, shared his thoughts with Action News.

"I think law enforcement knows more. I've always had this gut instinct that they think they know even maybe who did it, but they can't tell the public anything at this time and that's frustrating a lot of people," Hurley said.

Like many in Linwood, Hurley is looking for answers about Kauffman's murder.

"People have been stunned by this; they don't know who did it. They want April to have justice and I think people have shown a lot of restraint to reserve comment until they see where this is going to go," Hurley said.

While everyone waits for an arrest, Action News has learned a vigil honoring April Kauffman will be held Saturday at 8:00 p.m. along the bike path near her home.
