The teachers union said Wednesday that most of the layoffs involve school counselors and support staff. A spokeswoman says 263 union members are affected overall.
According to district spokesman Fernando Gallard (guy-YARD'), a total of about 290 layoff notices will go out Friday. They take effect June 30.
The school district is facing a $218 million budget shortfall for the fiscal year that begins July 1.
