Kayakers take over Schuylkill River

PHILADELPHIA - June 8, 2012

Under a bright blue sky, 55 kayakers and canoers paddled their way down the river to Boathouse Row.

The event was part of the completion of a 112 mile trip in the 14th annual Schuylkill River Sojourn.

"We run this for two reasons - one to focus on the water. Over a million and a half people take their drinking water from the Schuylkill River. It's important that we keep this river clean. Second the Schuylkill is rapidly becoming a recreational destination for people," said Kurt Zwikl, the event's Executive Director.

Officials say over 220 people registered for the week long trip down the river, which started last Saturday on some rough waters in Schuylkill Haven.

On Friday in perfect conditions, the colorful flotilla of kayaks and canoes passed Conshohocken. After that, they could see the Center City skyline, which signaled they were approaching the end of their journey.

"I wanted to start crying at the fact that I did it," said Nora Haefele.

"It was an awesome day. To see the river from that level was really beautiful," said Dennis Demara.

Event officials say 42 participants made the entire trip. Some joined in at points along the way but they all said they have little doubt that they'll do it again.
