$15,000 reward offered for 6 year old homicide

PHILADELPHIA - June 9, 2012

"We were high school sweethearts, since 11th grade we were together," said Arneatha Powell.

Six years after her husband's death, Arneatha Powell, still finds it hard to believe he's gone.

"I remember it as if it was yesterday," she said.

36 year old Michael Powell was a SEPTA Police Officer working a second security job at a construction site in the 2600 block of South 75th Street in Southwest Philadelphia. He had just arrived for his midnight shift on July 5, 2006.

That's when police say Powell was shot to death while still inside his SUV.

Police believe there were at least two shooters due to the angles the bullets hit the vehicle, and that they were behind Powell.

"He would never have seen them," said Arneatha.

Arneatha believes someone in the neighborhood knows something.

"They actually indicated that they saw a dark, white vehicle fleeing the scene," she said.

She is hoping a big reward will give the police more.

The Citizens Crime Commission is administering a $15,000 reward, and the city of Philadelphia is offering up to $20,000 for information leading to an arrest and conviction.

Anyone with information is asked to make an anonymous call to the Citizens Crime Commission at 215-546-TIPS or call the police hotline at 215-686-TIPS.

For Arneatha, she says everyday is still a struggle.

"I try to be the rock for my children, but it's difficult for me because I don't have anyone to lean on anymore. I'm coping," Arneatha said.
