Grays Ferry bystander killing suspect takes own life

GRAYS FERRY - June 25, 2012

Authorities say while waiting for further processing inside his cell at police headquarters detention unit, 28-year-old Shekinah Williams hanged himself with his t-shirt and was pronounced dead early Monday morning.

Williams was charged Sunday in the shooting death of Clarice Douglas which occurred on April 20th on the 1500 block of South Corlies Street.

Authorities say Douglas was shot and killed during a gun battle between Williams and another man.

Police told Action News back in April, Douglas was in the middle of the block, walking back towards her house, when the two men opened fire on each other.

According to investigators, she was shot several times, including once in the head. Douglas was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where she later died.

Investigators say at least 18 shots were fired during the fatal incident.

Police say Williams was arrested on the 1600 block of South 16th Street without incident.
