Arrest in South Phila. playground arson

SOUTH PHILADELPHIA - June 25, 2012

Kevin Beattie, 26, of the 2400 block of Camac Street, was arrested on Friday.

Police say he was responsible for the arson at FDR Park at 2000 Pattison Avenue on the night of June 17th.

Beattie was charged with Arson, Causing/Risking a Catastrophe, Unsworn Falsifying and related offenses.

The playground was deemed to be a total loss.

In a news conference a few days after the fire, Mayor Michael Nutter called the arson an "act of evil."

The playground was constructed in October 2011 and cost an estimated $300,000 and included unique equipment, some of it accessible to kids with disabilities.

Kids and parents said it was unlike other playgrounds - the best around - and they were sad and angry to see it burned beyond repair.

Mayor Nutter vowed to fix this playground. He called the Philadelphia Eagles organization and owners Jeffrey and Christina Lurie pledged immediately to give whatever is needed to rebuild.
