Del. eyes Medicaid expansion after court ruling

DOVER, Del. (AP) - June 28, 2012

The Supreme Court said Thursday that states can't be forced to expand eligibility under the new health care law.

State officials now are waiting to see if that ruling will affect their prior view that expanding Medicaid eligibility made sense because it would bring a higher percentage of federal matching funds and would extend coverage to thousands of uninsured Delawareans.

Delaware now gets a 54 percent federal Medicaid match. Officials had been told that a move to 133 percent of the poverty level would increase the federal match to 75 percent for people added to the state program in 1996, when eligibility increased to 100 percent of the poverty level.
