Police: Cigarette request leads to robbery

NEW CASTLE, Del. - July 2, 2012

25-year-old Eric Gibbs, from the unit block of Revelle Street in New Castle, Delaware, is charged with robbery, harassment, menacing, and disorderly conduct.

According to investigators, it was 8:50 p.m. Sunday when police responded to the report of a robbery on the unit block of Mackenzie Court in the Edinburgh Villas Townhouse community.

Arriving officers spoke with the 40-year-old victim who explained that a man, later identified as Eric Gibbs, asked her for a cigarette, but when she denied his request he stole her purse.

After calling 9-1-1, the woman confronted Gibbs as he allegedly rummaged through her purse nearby. That's when, according to the victim, Gibbs threw her purse into the bushes on her front lawn, then picked up a baby stroller and held it as if he was going to hit her.

Gibbs fled the scene having allegedly taken cigarettes and an undisclosed amount of cash from the victim's purse.

Police located Gibbs in a nearby neighborhood and took him into custody without incident.

A routine computer check revealed that Gibbs was also wanted on an outstanding warrant issued for an unrelated incident.
