7-year-old calls 911, saves mother's life

NEWARK, Del. - August 3, 2012

Authorities say it was approximately 1:15 p.m. last Thursday when the Newark, Delaware 9-1-1 Center received the call.

7-year-old Keairra Stevens reported that her mother was not acting right and needed help.

Keairra talked to two different dispatchers until paramedics arrived at her home.

Her mother - Chekita Stevens - was unconscious after suffering a diabetic emergency. She was immediately transported to Christiana Hospital where she made a full recovery.

Stevens credits her daughter for remaining calm and knowing exactly what to do.

"I'm just thrilled that she was there. I could have been home, fell off the bed and still laid there. I'm glad that she came up and knew what to do pretty much," she said.

Stevens says she taught her daughter at a very young age about dialing 9-1-1.

She showed Keairra how to use a cell phone and helped her memorize her address and phone number.

Stevens says she also has emergency contacts and information about her diabetic condition posted around the house.
