Special needs girl gets OK for kidney transplant

PHILADELPHIA, PA.; August 7, 2012

4-year-old Amelia Rivera of Stratford, New Jersey has now been approved for that transplant.

Her story sparked controversy in January, when Amelia's parents say they were originally told by a doctor at Children's Hospital she was not eligible for a transplant because she was quote "mentally retarded."

Amelia has Wolf Hirschhorn syndrome, a genetic disorder.

A blog by her mother posted on a support for families dealing with Wolf Hirschhorn quickly went viral, and aroused ire, especially with families of other special needs children.

Officials at CHOP later apologized for the way the situation was handled.

Amelia's mother will donate a kidney when the little girl's kidney function dips below 10-percent.
