Suspected fedora bank bandit in custody

NEWARK, Del. - August 10, 2012

24-year-old Dexter Bland of Bethune Drive in New Castle is facing second degree robbery charges.

The charges stem from the robbery of the PNC Bank, located in the Newark Shopping Center at 230 East Main Street.

Police say it was around 9:20 a.m. Wednesday August 1, 2012 when a well dressed man entered the bank and handed the teller a note demanding money.

The teller turned over an undisclosed amount of cash and the suspect, later identified as Bland, fled the bank on foot towards the area of the shopping center.

In addition to the tan fedora hat and plaid sports coat, the man also wore a white polo shirt, khaki pants and black boots.

Police released surveillance photos from the bank to the public and quickly received multiple tips linking Bland to the crime.

Bland was taken into custody yesterday when he walked into a Newark court to inquire about unpaid traffic tickets.

Bland is being held in lieu of $25,000 bail.
