NJ to Camden schools: 1 more chance before takeover

CAMDEN, N.J. - August 10, 2012

A state report released Thursday finds problems with teaching, administrative and low test scores in a district long beset by administrative controversy and a student population that has to deal with poverty and violence.

Twenty-three of Camden's 26 schools are on a priority list of the 75 worst-performing schools in the state.

The state says the district must hire a new superintendent with a record of turning districts around. Officials also say Camden must embrace the Renaissance Schools concept that will bring a new type of independently operated school to the city.

The state says it will have "no choice but to more aggressively intervene" if things don't improve.
