Parenting: Safety tips for severe weather

August 17, 2012

I recently decided information is power, so we reviewed some important tips for staying safe during severe weather.

First, we always stay alert to weather warnings. Far too many people are complacent when it comes listening to advice from the National Weather Service.

If you hear thunder, you are close enough to get hit by lightning. The kids are already well aware that they are not allowed to stay at soccer, the pool, or the beach if they hear thunder.

If a Tornado Warning is issued, move to the basement of your home or in the lowest level. Stay away from windows and out of automobiles if possible.

There are some good websites that talk about ways to educate children while making them feel safe.

It's always good to teach children safety tips in a calm moment, rather than panicking them during a storm.
