Police: Pa. man says wife's death an accident

NEWFOUNDLAND, Pa. (AP) -September 10, 2012

Investigators say Bertrand Schroeder told police he "did a stupid thing by getting drunk and then messing with a rifle" when he fatally wounded his wife with a gunshot early Sunday morning at their home in Newfoundland, Wayne County.

Donnalynn Schroeder died during surgery a few hours after the shooting.

Bertrand Schroeder allegedly told police he'd previously pointed a gun at his wife during arguments.

Authorities say they removed more than 50 beagles, mostly puppies, from the home. Bertrand Schroeder faces charges including criminal homicide and cruelty to animals.

Court records don't list an attorney for Bertrand Schroeder.
