Hundreds of police officers, elected officials and friends and family of Lt. Joseph Szczerba (SUR-buh) attended a ceremony Sunday to rename the county building. Szczerba was fatally stabbed on Sept. 16, 2011, after confronting and chasing a suspect in a vehicle break-in.
Earlier this year, the Faithful Friends Animal Society in Wilmington also named a new cat adoption room after Szczerba. The officer had volunteered regularly at the no-kill shelter.
