Several Wilmington residents were evacuated from their homes after a car struck a residential gas meter, causing a natural gas leak.

It happened early Friday afternoon near North Clayton Street and Gilpin Avenue.

Police say a man lost control of his vehicle and hit the gas meter in front of a home on Gilpin Avenue.

Several homes were evacuated and streets in the area closed as utility crews arrived to shut off the gas.

Officials at the scene told Action News that crews will have to dig up the street to make repairs.

The work was expected to take several hours.
