Man charged in crash he first blamed on dead wife

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) - September 25, 2012

State College police charged 49-year-old David Bartley on Monday on charges he was under the influence of prescription pills when he lost control of his Jeep in July and crashed into a telephone pole, killing his wife, 43-year-old Susan Bartley.

David Bartley originally told investigators at the scene his wife was driving before the crash and threw herself in front of him to save him, police said.

But authorities said Monday that Bartley later confessed that he was the one driving because his wife wasn't feeling well.

Investigators say he had a suspended license and was under the influence of prescription drugs at the time of the crash.

Bartley was arraigned and held on $50,000 bail. Court records don't list an attorney for him.
