AG: Fake tree injury leads to insurance fraud charge

PHILADELPHIA - September 28, 2012

Joan Burns, 63, of Amber Street in Philadelphia, was arrested on Thursday, the Pennsylvania Attorney General's Office announced.

According to investigators, Burns filed a claim with her insurance company saying she was injured after a tree limb fell on her car while she was inside.

Burns is alleged to have claimed more than $3,000 in treatment for her injuries.

However, investigators say, Burns filed those claims two weeks after filing another claim with her insurance company, which said the car was parked and unoccupied when it was hit by the tree limb.

Burns is charged with one count of insurance fraud, one count of criminal attempt to commit insurance fraud, and one count of theft by deception.

She was arraigned and released on $10,000 secured bail.
