Homicide suspect shot by police in Strawberry Mansion

STRAWBERRY MANSION - September 28, 2012

It happened around 3:00 Friday afternoon at 32nd and Oxford streets.

Two 22nd district officers spotted a gray Chevrolet and conducted a routine traffic stop. That's when it was discovered that the driver - 27-year-old Maceo Emerson Waring - was wanted for a recent homicide.

As officers went to arrest him, Waring allegedly tried to grab the officers gun.

"They tried to get the male out of the vehicle, when a violent struggle occurs. Mr. Waring reaches for the officer's weapon and he starts to get the weapon out of the holster. The officer's partner shoots two times, the struggle continues and the other officer fires one shot," said Lt. Ray Evers.

The suspect was struck at least three times and was taken Temple University Medical Center in critical but stable condition.

Meanwhile, police say Waring is a suspect in the Sept. 10 killing of Nieem Giles on the 4600 block of Horrocks Street.

An investigation in still underway.
