Officials say the gas leak was reported around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday on the SEPTA subway line in that part of North Philadelphia.
A total of 174 people, including many SEPTA employees, were evacuated for more than two hours while the gas was being shut off.
Workers had to dig to reach the shutoff valve. Once that was done, the evacuation order was lifted and the evacuees were allowed to return.
Fire officials deemed the situation a minimal hazard when it was determined the leaking gas was safely venting into the open air, not into any structures where it could concentrate to an explosive level.
The Broad Street Line and Regional Rail lines were impacted during this incident, but all lines are now back in service.
