It happened around midnight Saturday at the intersection of East Girard and East Montgomery avenues.
Authorities say the water main ruptured sending thousands of gallons of water running down the street.
There are 10 homes without water. PWD hopes to have water restored by the afternoon or early evening.
Girard Avenue is shut down from Susquehanna Avenue to Palmer Street.
Crews hope to have the area open to traffic sometime Sunday afternoon.
