Simple steps to keep kids safe going to school

NEW YORK CITY, N.Y.; January 14, 2013

They come from a 'Safe Routes To School,' a pilot program in New York City that's cut pedestrian injuries by more than a third.

In the current edition of the journal 'Pediatrics,' authors noted the program also cut injuries during school-travel hours by 44 per cent.

The federally-supported program separates play areas from roadways, improves visibility at intersections, makes stop signs more conspicuous, and adds speed bumps to high-risk areas.

Pedestrian injuries are the biggest since reason kids are admitted to hospitals.
