Coney Island is going plastic

NEW YORK (AP) - December 18, 2012

A judge has ruled New York City can go ahead with plans to replace some of the famed wooden boardwalk in Brooklyn with concrete and plastic.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg maintains the hardwood in the boardwalk isn't environmentally friendly.

City officials say concrete sections of the boardwalk also held up much better during Superstorm Sandy.

Opponents filed a lawsuit to stop the plan, saying it didn't receive the necessary environmental review.
